
Fiji is found at 17 degrees 20 minutešs south 179 degrees 0 minutes east. There are three hundred
islands in Fiji, from small coral atolls to large volcanic islands. Only about 100 of the islands are
inhabited. The international dateline runs through Fiji. The Malaysians were the first to settle,
coming from Southeast Asia around 6000 BC The Polynesians didn't arrive until the 15th century A.D.
After years control by the British, independence came to Fiji in 1970. The capital is Suva, on the
main island of Viti Levu. Sugar and tourism are the main industries. The population is about 746,000
people. The island has a mild tropical climate except when the cyclones occur between November and
