On the left is Don Baman, on the right is Phil Shelton. In 1980 Phil moved to
Maine from Long Island, NY. It was here that Phil thought he could build a schooner for his friend Steve Pagels. Using local materials and living a
modest lifestyle he felt he could build an affordable boat. One obstacle was the fact that
his log cabin was miles from the coast and electricity. Don Baman had just completed his first year at the boatbuilding school at Eastport,Maine, and offered to help work
on the schooner. Not only did Don have electricity, but he had access to the Narraguagus
River into which they could launch the "Janet May".
